Filezilla – A Guide, How To Connect To FTP And Various Features

If you have a web server and want to upload files on it, you need a so-called FTP function. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. Several programs used for HTML editing have an already built-in function for FTP, and often there is a service at most major web hosts where the user can upload their files directly through their web browser. Often you can do very well with these opportunities offered by the hosting company, but sometimes an application for FTP management can be a much more advantageous option or complement, as these programs often contain much more features and also provide a better overview of the file transfer itself. Filezilla is one of these programs.

Install and download the program

FileZilla is a completely free application developed in so-called Opensource. The program is in the form of both FTP Client and FTP Server. If you want to use this program and its FTP features to upload files to the web server, or download them from there, select the FTP client. The user can have multiple connections open to different web servers and administer them in the Location Manager in the application. To do this, you choose to open Site Manager in the menu. In order to connect the application to its web server, it is necessary to specify in its Location Manager its data for “user” “host” and “password” “password”. These information is obtained from their hosting company. If no other requested information is provided, port 21 can often be specified as defalut, or the field may be left blank. In order to see the “user” and “password” fields, alternatively, “normal” may be required as the login type.

When the program is running, you can try the connection to the web server itself with “connect”. In case everything works, the user will see the text “remote site” and the folders that exist. To open a file or folder click on the one you want to open. If a site is located in a subfolder, the path to this folder may need to be specified in the Location Manager. In Site Manager, the user can also specify local folders where the site is located so that it does not have to be browsed every time you connect to the site with its FTP program. Connecting to the program is thus simple.

How to transfer files

The Filezilla FPT program displays the entire file structure of the local computer and remote computer (web server) next to each other. Often, the local computer on the left and the web server appear to the right. However, this may differ if using another FTP application. Before checking over a file or folder, make sure that the correct and opened folder is selected on the web server. Then the transfer from the local computer can begin. There are several possible ways to send files from the local computer to the web server at. The most common thing is to drag and drop the files. You can also select the files and folders you want to transfer and then right-click on them and select “send.”

This FTP application has a default mode for sending files. This mode is called auto and means that the many files are transferred completely binary. Often, you do not need to change this, but in case of a problem with a file after the transfer has been made, the error may be the use of the wrong method of transferring the files. You may then need to use ASCII mode as a text mode. This mode is used to remove redundant characters such as line breaks, and to make files compatible with all server programs. A file type that often needs this is CGI files. Often it does not work to run files on the web server otherwise. ASCII uses only seven of eight bits when transferring files and it was essentially something that was counted when the broadband was not available and you transferred files with modem by default. The binary files use all eight bits when transferring files, and are used primarily for more demanding details such as databases, images, videos, program files, and the like.

Change Rights Feature

With all FTP programs, it is important that users as user enter different rights to all folders and files where needed. If you do not know which rights to use, you can specify the same level for all files and subfolders in the folder that you use on the folder containing the program to use. For example, some files belonging to a particular project may have some kind of rights. For example, a newsletter may be sent out. All this can be done directly in Filezilla.

You can change a file or folder’s settings by clicking the right mouse button on the folder that contains the files and folders associated with the application. Then choose the “File Rights” menu. Here, you enter a value for which rights to apply by selecting the right option. You then choose whether to repeat this in all subdirectories. When done, you choose to execute on “only in directories”. After that, right-click the folder that contains all the folders again and select the “File Rights” menu again. The rights to the files are set by selecting the value of the right or writing with the number. Then specify that the action will be repeated in all subdirectories. Select after approving the “Only in Files” button.

Simple and easy to use

Many people think it’s difficult to transfer files and programs to a web server or website. That is not the case. However, you often need an FTP program of any kind, and Filezilla is one such. With this program you can quickly and easily transfer things to the web server and see and follow the entire process. Additionally, you can change names and permissions of all files, subfolders and applications directly in Filezilla. This program is built in Opensource and is therefore completely free to use. Additionally, the individual user can customize the program according to their own preferences and how they want the layout to look.
